Questo studio di Pupino offre un’analisi della poetica pirandelliana quale si evince tanto dai testi saggistici quanto da quelli di finzione, ma soprattutto dal fondamentale saggio intitolato L’umorismo, qui preso finalmente in considerazione a partire dalle due diverse edizioni che ne pubblicò l’autore.Si analizza anche il doppio profilo, filosofico e letterario, che Pirandello intende evidenziare, al punto che in filigrana, dietro l’umorismo, si intravede sempre più chiaramente la metamorfosi del tragico che si compie tra Otto e Novecento.In realtà l’aspetto letterario è predominante: è in funzione della letteratura, che si può recuperare il presunto aspetto filosofico, dove allora l’appello a ripristinare l’«Essere nella sua unità» non può essere raccolto, sul piano letterario, se non dal «misto di tragico e di comico» che la Prefazione ai Sei personaggi avvalora per giustificare l’umorismo, instaurando la metamorfosi del tragico in tragicomico e favorendo dunque umoristicamente la sintesi tra opposti.
